If you want something quiet and close, visit Tulum, if you don't mind the distance from Riviera Maya go to Chichén Itzá. Tulum's site location, facing the Caribbean is really unique, though. Without a doubt, they are the most beautiful ruins in the Mexican Caribbean. Chichén is a very special and magnificent place.

While Tulum is trendy, note that most of the best hotels offer eco-chic luxury (if you're looking for a large resort experience, look elsewhere) and are located along the 6-mile-long stretch of beachfront from the Tulum Ruins to the soft sand beach in the south end.

Be sure to wear comfortable shoes too as you'll want to walk around and explore everywhere – flip flops aren't ideal; I'd suggest covered-toe sandals or training shoes are the best options. As I said above, bring a swimsuit and towel if you will be visiting a cenote on your Chichen Itza visit.
