The Newport Cliff Walk in Rhode Island is roughly 3.5 miles long and is a mix of difficulty levels. The northern half, starting at Memorial Boulevard, is relatively easy and paved, making it accessible for casual walkers and even strollers up to a certain point (near the 40 Steps). However, as you move toward the southern end near Bailey's Beach, the path transforms into rugged, unpaved terrain. In this "difficult" section, you must scramble over natural New England shoreline rocks and boulders, which can be slippery when wet. Because of these sharp transitions, it is often described as a "dual-personality" trail. If you plan to walk the entire length, you should wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear rather than sandals. While the views of the Gilded Age mansions and the Atlantic Ocean are world-class throughout, the southern two miles are a true hike that requires significant balance and physical effort.
