Is Disney World opening an airport?

Construction of the Walter Elias Disney Airport at Disney World, which would serve Guests flying to the Resort area to visit the parks, must be completed by June 30, 2023, as new legislation takes effect on July 1, 2023?legislation that will take away Disney's autonomy in building its very own airport forever.

As of early 2026, Disney World is not opening its own commercial airport. While the resort famously had the STOLport (Short Take-Off and Landing) near the Magic Kingdom in the 1970s, it has long been used only for administrative purposes or as a staging area. Instead, the focus for 2026 has been on the massive $1 billion expansion of Norfolk International Airport (ORF) and the ongoing enhancements at Orlando International Airport (MCO). A major development in early 2026 is the official launch of Waymo autonomous rideshare services connecting MCO directly to various points within Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando. This self-driving service aims to replace the "void" left by the retirement of the Magical Express, providing a high-tech, seamless transit link for guests arriving by air without the need for Disney to operate its own private airfield.
