Is Downtown Disney the same as CityWalk?

While Downtown Disney has the amazing World of Disney store, you have to drive to get there from any of the parks or hotels. CityWalk is located in between the Universal parking garage and the parks themselves!

Disney Springs is an array of shopping, dining, and entertainment with a Disney twist. Universal Citywalk is known more for their adult nightlife, as well as shopping and dining. Citywalk is also much smaller than Disney Springs. It really depends on your unique wants and needs since everyone is different.

A rebrand and unification of the total area happened in 1995. Both areas were rebranded simply as Downtown Disney. This name was correct until the most recent retheme and significant renovation gave us the current Disney Springs. This overhaul happened in 2015.

Universal is more walkable/Disney is much bigger. There's going to be some variance based on which hotel you're staying at, but several hotels, CityWalk, the two Universal theme parks, and Volcano Bay (the water park) are all walkable.

Disney also revealed its plan to change the name of the area to Disney Springs in order to give it a small-town feel, playing off and highlighting an existing lake. We were told that the number of restaurants, shops and venues would double to 150.

The closure comes as Disney undergoes a major multi-year renovation — or, in Disney parlance, a reimagining of Downtown Disney. Disney plans to open up several areas of Downtown Disney as open-air gathering spaces, where visitors and families can picnic or hang out and bring in new shops and name-brand dining tenants.

Disney Springs is about 6.5 miles from Magic Kingdom Park and it takes about 20 minutes by car from the Transportation and Ticket Center (the parking lot for Magic Kingdom Park).
