Is Epcot or Universal better?

The toughest decision is deciding which one. Islands of Adventure has the better roller coasters (VelociCoaster, Hulk, and Hagrid's) but Universal Studios has a better mix of attractions and the better Harry Potter land. As Harry Potter fans, I recommend Universal Studios.

For thrilling theme park staples, go with Universal. Disney offers a tamer, more family-friendly experience. After spending seven years in the U.S. Air Force as an Arabic linguist, Carissa is now a freelance writer using points and miles to fund a four-year (and counting!) adventure.

While a Universal vacation tends to be slightly less than a Disney vacation, food is going to cost you about the same at either resort. A family of four at Disney can expect to spend between $200-$300 a day on dining, depending on what restaurants they go to. The same goes for Universal.

If you're into rides more than general theme park merriment and atmosphere, we suggest skipping Epcot, as it doesn't offer as many thrills. However, families, foodies and world's fair enthusiasts will likely enjoy their time at this concept park.

EPCOT is arguably the least family-friendly park at Walt Disney World, so you may not need more than a few hours to do everything of interest if you have small children. With that said, a full day at EPCOT is highly recommended for first-timers.

Walt Disney World Epcot – Best for Ages 8 to 14 It's a great theme park for intellectually curious kids (and adults) but not the best for little kids under the age of 8. Older kids will enjoy some of the major thrill rides (like Test Track and Mission: SPACE) and may really enjoy World Showcase.

However, the Universal Studios age recommendation is a fairly mature 8 years-old. If they're younger they probably won't be able to appreciate much of the entertainment or be able to go on many rides, but families do have a fun experience when taking a trip together.

So when should you visit for the lowest crowds, generally? Go on a Wednesday! Fewer guests head to EPCOT mid-week and you can hopefully then walk up to the festival booths without having to wait in long lines. As a bonus tip — make sure to visit the festival booths early in the day.

As a general matter, Animal Kingdom is the park that requires the least strategy and is the easiest place to beat the crowds in all of Walt Disney World. It doesn't require Genie+ or Individual Lightning Lanes, and is pretty easy to knock out everything–and then some–if you stay for a full day.
