Is Gdansk or Krakow better?

Krakow has more stag parties as Gdansk is more undiscovered and unknown. As you like the beach and the coast Gdansk would suit you best but you really need sunshine to see Sopot at it's best. If the weather is bad there is more to see in Krakow as it is larger and you can always visit the salt mines in bad weather.

Choosing between Gdansk and Krakow depends on whether you prefer maritime charm or medieval grandeur. Krakow is often considered the "cultural capital" of Poland; it features one of Europe's largest medieval market squares, the historic Wawel Royal Castle, and a vibrant nightlife in the Jewish Quarter (Kazimierz). It is also the primary hub for visiting the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and the Wieliczka Salt Mine. However, Krakow can feel significantly more crowded and "touristy," especially during the peak 2026 summer season. Gdansk, located on the Baltic coast, offers a completely different "Hanseatic" vibe with its colorful Dutch-style architecture, world-class amber museums, and a strong focus on 20th-century history (specifically World War II and the Solidarity movement). Gdansk is generally described as feeling more "pristine" and relaxed, with the added benefit of being part of the "Tricity" alongside the seaside resort of Sopot and the port city of Gdynia. If you want deep medieval history and a bustling city atmosphere, Krakow is the winner; if you want fresh sea air, unique architecture, and a more laid-back pace, Gdansk is the better choice.
