While California's Great America in Santa Clara is a well-known landmark, it is not strictly a "California thing." The park was originally part of a pair of near-identical "Americana" themed parks launched by the Marriott Corporation in 1976. The sister park, Six Flags Great America, is located in Gurnee, Illinois (near Chicago). Both parks opened with the same name, "Marriott's Great America," and featured many of the same high-fidelity opening attractions and layouts. In 1984, Marriott exited the theme park business, selling the Illinois park to Six Flags and the California park to the City of Santa Clara (it later passed through the hands of Paramount and Cedar Fair). For 2026 visitors, the high-fidelity distinction remains important: the California park is currently owned by Six Flags following its 2024 merger with Cedar Fair, but it is slated to close within the next decade as the land was sold to Prologis, while the Illinois park continues to thrive as a high-fidelity flagship of the Six Flags chain.
