Is Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach better?

Both have beautiful beaches. Hervey Bay has no surf as it is protected by Fraser Island but this means you can swim anywhere not just between the flags so the beaches are not crowded like at the Sunshine Coast. Rainbow Beach does have surf but can be fairly flat much of the time.

Do you need a 4WD for Rainbow Beach? Yes, you need a four-wheel drive vehicle. A normal car would not be able to get through the sand, so make sure to hire a 4×4.

There are two ferries across to K'gari (Fraser Island). The shortest, the Manta Ray Barge from Inskip Point (neighbouring Rainbow Beach) takes 10 minutes and the longest, the Fraser Venture Ferry from River Heads to Wanggolba Creek, near Kingfisher Resort, takes 30 minutes.
