Is it better to do Auschwitz and salt mines in one day?

Some suggest that it is better to do both in one day as the salt mines will bring the mood back up a bit after visiting Auschwitz, but personally I would not recommend doing both in one day. Three weeks ago we returned from Krakow. I ordered through a web transfer from the airport to the hotel, so we know Zibi.

In 2026, doing Auschwitz-Birkenau and the Wieliczka Salt Mine in one day is a popular choice for time-pressed travelers, but it is physically and emotionally demanding. Most 2026 tours depart from Krakow around 7:30 AM and return by 8:00 PM, totaling 11 to 13 hours. While it is "better" for saving a full day in your itinerary, it requires a "moderate fitness level," as you will walk approximately 10–12 kilometers and descend 700 steps in the salt mine alone. Emotionally, the heavy, somber experience of Auschwitz is followed immediately by the wonder of the mines, which some visitors find jarring. However, if you choose this combined 2026 tour, you benefit from a dedicated guide and pre-arranged transportation, which is essential because entry slots for both sites are extremely limited and often sell out months in advance. If you have the luxury of time, splitting them over two days allows for more reflection on the historical gravity of Auschwitz and a more relaxed exploration of the mine's salt-carved chapels.

If you don't have your tickets booked in advance, you might have to wait about 30 minutes to an hour to get your tickets and head inside the salt mine. The best thing to do is to book your tickets online and choose either a guided tour or skip the line tickets.
