In the big scheme of things, there really won't be much difference. You would be surprised on the amount of people who do actually commute between Hana and central Maui. The day of the week doesn't matter too much, but the time of day that you go sure does. I recommend hitting the road as early as you can.

The views and black sand beach were worth it along the way. I probably wouldn't do it again, though. It was a one-and-done thing. All in all, the trip took us about 3hrs there and half the time on the way back with no stops (and driving probably a bit too fast).
