Is it better to fly into Glasgow or Edinburgh?

Glasgow's closer to the Highlands and the western islands, so if you want to visit either of those areas, Glasgow is a bit more convenient gateway, requiring a bit less transportation time to get to where you want to go. Flights to Edinburgh are usually cheaper for me, so that's how I choose.

Choosing between Glasgow (GLA) and Edinburgh (EDI) in 2026 depends on your itinerary and budget. Edinburgh Airport is generally the better choice for first-time tourists; it is closer to the historic capital, offers a wider range of international long-haul connections, and has a direct tram line to the city center. However, Glasgow International is often significantly cheaper for domestic UK flights and serves as a better gateway if you are heading directly to the Highlands, Loch Lomond, or the West Coast. Glasgow also tends to have lower hotel prices and a more "authentic," less-crowded urban feel. Since the two cities are only about 50 minutes apart by train (costing roughly £15), it is often wise to check prices for both. If your goal is "The Royal Mile and Castles," fly to Edinburgh. If your goal is "Shopping, Nightlife, and Outdoor Adventure," Glasgow is the practical and budget-friendly winner.
