Is it better to stay in Interlaken or Zurich?

Zurich is much larger and esentially a business city - although in a pretty setting. Interlaken is a smallish town set between 2 lakes (syrprise) that gives eacy access to themuhc cuter towns up in them mountains and the rail up the Jungfrau.

Luzern is more comfortable, old money and beautiful setting on the lake. Interlaken is closer to the big mountains, hiking, etc. I prefer Interlaken, but Luzern is more comfortable for first time to Switzerland. I would not want to spend 4 hours on the train to commute from one to the other however.

Two days in Interlaken is doable, but 3 days is perfect. In two days, you can take a scenic train or cable car ride to the top of a mountain, hike or bike through the stunning countryside, or enjoy water sports on the picturesque lakes.

June to August: The best time to visit Interlaken is during the summer, from June to September. The temperature lingers around a pleasant 18°C to 20°C. It is the perfect time for aimless walks, trekking, mountaineering and adventure activities.

You will obviously have come to the area to see the magnificent mountain scenery...so stay in Lauterbrunnen where you will actually be in the middle of it all. Interlaken is not in the Alps and is best used as a transport hub. If you should get bored, which you won't, then Interlaken is only a 2 minute train ride away.
