Is it better to stay in Obidos or Nazare?

Óbidos is further away from the other places you want to visit. And, depending on the time of the year (somewhat) it will be overrun by tourists. Nazaré isn't my favorite place on the Silver coast but would be a better option than Obidos. São Martinho do Porto is another lovely small town on the coast.

Deciding between Óbidos and Nazaré depends on whether you prefer medieval charm or coastal energy. Óbidos is a beautifully preserved walled village; staying overnight allows you to experience its romantic, cobblestone streets and walk the ramparts after the massive bus-tour crowds have departed at 5:00 PM. It is perfect for couples seeking a quiet, historic atmosphere. Nazaré, conversely, is a vibrant seaside town famous for its massive "big waves" and traditional fishing culture. It offers a much wider range of hotels, bustling seafood restaurants, and a lively beach scene. In 2026, Nazaré is considered the better "base" for a multi-day stay because it has more infrastructure and is centrally located for day trips to Batalha and Alcobaça. However, if you are looking for a singular, "fairytale" night, Óbidos is the winner. For most travelers, the best strategy is to spend one night in Óbidos for the atmosphere and then move to Nazaré for 2–3 nights to enjoy the ocean views and the easier access to the rest of the Silver Coast region.

Given the dimension of the town of Nazaré, it is easy to visit the main attractions of Nazaré in just one day. However, if you would like to spend some time enjoying the sun and Nazaré's beaches, then I suggest adding a day to the itinerary and spending two days in Nazaré instead.

However, it's important to note that Nazaré has more than one beach. At Praia do Norte you'll find massive waves, but there are several beach breaks in and around the city where you can surf great (though) smaller waves too. Nevertheless, Nazaré is not for beginners.

WHY ARE THE WAVES IN NAZARÉ SO BIG? This is possible because of the Nazaré Canyon, an underwater geomorphological phenomenon that allows the swell to form to perfect giant waves. It is the largest underwater canyon in Europe, about 170 kilometers along the coast, reaching a staggering depth of 5,000 meters.

For experienced surfers, the best time of year for surfing in Portugal is late winter to early spring, especially between September and April. During these months, swells are definitely more powerful, producing heavy waves measuring around 2– 4.5 meters (6 – 15 feet) that are better left to advanced surfers.
