Is it better to take the Coast Starlight north or south?

My wife and I did the Coast Starlight for my birthday a year or two ago. I checked the schedule of the northbound train and found that the really spectacular scenery was in daylight. The southbound train has less daylight scenery. One of the most spectacular sights northbound is the morning of the second day.
