Driving from Montreal to Quebec City is considered one of the easiest and most straightforward road trips in North America. The journey covers approximately 250 kilometers (155 miles) and typically takes about 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic. There are two main highways: Autoroute 20 (South Shore) and Autoroute 40 (North Shore). Autoroute 20 is generally faster and more direct, while Autoroute 40 offers a slightly more scenic route through older towns. The roads are well-maintained, dual-carriageway expressways with clear signage in French (though the symbols are universal). The primary "difficulty" arises during the winter months (December through March), when heavy snowfall, "black ice," and blowing snow can make conditions hazardous. In Quebec, winter tires are mandatory by law from December 1 to March 15, and drivers should be comfortable with winter driving techniques. During the summer and autumn, however, the drive is incredibly pleasant, featuring numerous "Halte Routière" (rest stops) with gas stations and restaurants, making it a stress-free experience for even novice drivers or international tourists.
