As of February 2026, the United Kingdom is generally considered safe for international travelers, but a major procedural change has recently taken effect. Starting February 25, 2026, the UK has fully enforced its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme. This means that travelers from 85 nationalities (including the U.S., Canada, and Australia) who previously traveled visa-free must now have digital permission before boarding their flight or ferry. Carriers are now strictly required to check for this digital status, and passengers without an ETA or a valid visa will be denied boarding. Beyond these new entry requirements, travelers are advised to follow standard safety precautions in major cities. The UK government continues to modernize its borders to be "contactless," meaning that while physical safety is high, digital compliance is now the most critical factor for a successful and "safe" entry into the country.
