Is it safe to walk around London with a backpack?

I don't really know anywhere in London that doesn't allow backpacks. I've never had a problem, with mine (I take a day pack with me because I am in London all day). The Royal Academy of Arts does state it doesn't allow them, but I've seen people in there with them - it depends on the size I think.
