A week won't be too long at all. That gives you just enough time to get the aloha in your blood. On our last trip we stayed 10 days and had plenty to do. Theres lots of things to keep you busy...so you can pick a few days to be really active, and a few days to relax.
Can you wear jeans in Hawaii? Sure, you can wear jeans in Hawaii. But unless you're going up to the summit of Haleakala you'll probably be more comfortable in almost anything else due to the balmy temperatures and humidity. I have visited Hawaii in every season and never wished I had jeans with me.

Wailea: For high-end lodgings, look no further than Wailea. This area includes several incredible beachfront resorts, condo complexes, a lovely outdoor mall, and several quality restaurants. Our favorite luxury resorts include the Four Seasons Maui, Hotel Wailea, the Wailea Beach Marriott, and the Grand Wailea.
Having a humid climate, Maui is also home to many bugs and mosquitoes. If you don't want to get pestered with these insects, then a mosquito repellant is a must-have for you. If you have an anti-itch ointment, throw it in your bag too.
You can still have a wonderful vacation on Maui without a rental car. The main reason for most to visit Hawaii is the beach, sun, and relaxation. A rental car isn't required for those three activities. Find a good place to stay and soak up the sun without worrying about the resort parking fee.

For a more authentic feel, skip the mega-resorts of West and South Maui and head to the North Shore, East Maui, or Upcountry, where you're more likely to interact with locals than with tourists. Upcountry is the least touristy area.
We were in Maui in July and found the people we met to be very friendly. But we always take the time to talk to them and ask them question about their lives and the things they like to do on the island. Everyone was very out going and friendly. Just make sure you are the same and you should meet alot of nice people.
