Is it worth staying in La Spezia for Cinque Terre?

The accommodations are cheaper in La Spezia than if you were to stay in Cinque Terre, and the roads are a lot easier to navigate with luggage! La Spezia makes a great home base for your northern Italy / Cinque Terre adventures!

Yes, staying in La Spezia is widely considered the "smart move" for visiting the Cinque Terre in 2026, especially for budget-conscious or logistically minded travelers. While La Spezia itself is a naval port city and lacks the "postcard" charm of the five villages, it offers significant advantages. Hotels and Airbnbs in La Spezia are often half the price of those in Vernazza or Rio Maggiore. Furthermore, La Spezia is the primary transit hub; the "Cinque Terre Express" train runs every 15–20 minutes in 2026, reaching the first village (Riomaggiore) in just 7 minutes. Staying here allows you to avoid dragging heavy luggage up the hundreds of steep stairs found in the villages. It also provides access to a "real" Italian city with better supermarkets, diverse restaurants, and a lively late-night scene. For 2026 travelers, La Spezia serves as a perfect base camp, allowing for easy day trips to the villages while providing a much more comfortable and affordable place to sleep.

If you do decide to day-trip, the big but easygoing town of La Spezia is far closer than Genoa or Pisa, with just a seven-minute commute to the closest Cinque Terre village, Riomaggiore, and around 15 to 25 minutes to the farthest village, Monterosso.

Vernazza: Located to the north of the Cinque Terre, Vernazza is probably the most beautiful and picturesque fishing village of Cinque Terre, where its colourful houses hang above the sea level on rugged cliffs. It has a charming natural port and an old castle, built to protect the area from pirates.

i am probably a little biased but I think La Spezia is indeed a good base. You have all the amenities of a city (shopping, bars and restaurants) yet only 8 mins away from Riomaggiore by train and on to the rest of the cinque terre. Buses every 15 mins to Lerici or every 30 mins to Portovenere.

La Spezia also has a number of excellent museums and art galleries. The best places to stay in La Spezia are also perennially popular with walkers starting off on the Cinque Terre trail, and some of our picks are just outside town, on the hillsides overlooking the town, and the towns to come.

Shopping and prices The Cinque Terre is not cheap. As everywhere in the world, tourism has raised prices. I often go to the market of La Spezia to shop for food, it's much cheaper than the stores of the villages. In restaurants, you have to expect Western European prices.

You definately DO NOT need a guide. If you only have one day, Monterosso is the largest town and this is where you should go. If you plan a full day, I would recommend to hike to the next town (Vernazza). It's about an hour and a half, and sooooo beautiful!
