Is Jamaica a happy place?

Jamaica has failed to advance in its ranking on the World Happiness Report, falling five places on the 2023 report published on Monday (March 20). Jamaica ranked 68th out of 137 countries featured in this year's report.

Happiness is subjective, but according to the 2025 World Happiness Report, Jamaica consistently ranks as one of the "happiest" nations in the Caribbean, often placing at the top of regional rankings. In the most recent global index, Jamaica scored approximately 5.87 out of 10, placing it around 68th in the world. This score is based on factors like social support, life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, and perceptions of corruption. While the island faces significant economic challenges, including high debt and localized crime issues, the "happiness" of the nation is often attributed to a strong sense of community, a rich cultural heritage (music, food, and sports), and a resilient national spirit. For tourists in 2026, Jamaica is frequently described as a joyful destination due to the legendary "One Love" hospitality and the vibrant energy of the local population. However, it is a complex society; while the "Happiness Index" shows a positive trend and high social support, many residents still struggle with the high cost of living, creating a contrast between the idyllic resort experience and the daily realities of local life.
