Is jewelry cheaper in St Maarten or St Thomas?

Our experience in buying jewelry and watches was that St. Maarten offered the better deals. Wish I could remember (without going to find the receipts) the name of the place we bought my diamond Ebel... they far outdid St. Thomas, and since that's a somewhat price-controlled item we were pleasantly surprised.

Both islands are premier "duty-free" hubs, but St. Maarten is often cited as having a slight edge for "bargain hunters" in 2026 due to the sheer volume of competition and a lack of any sales tax on the Dutch side. St. Thomas (USVI) is the "gold standard" for high-end luxury brands and high-quality craftsmanship, offering a $1,600 duty-free allowance for U.S. citizens (double the usual limit). For the best high-value deal, it is a "pro-move" to comparison shop: St. Maarten is premier for loose diamonds and custom settings, while St. Thomas offers high-quality security and "American-style" consumer protections for major luxury watch and jewelry purchases.

Thomas can be slightly less expensive overall than St. John. It's a bit easier to work within a budget on St. Thomas where you don't have to necessarily rent a car, you have different hotel tiers to choose from, and you have access to cheaper food options (in both restaurants and the larger grocery stores).
