Is Kissimmee safe from Hurricane Ian?

Hundreds of Kissimmee residents have been rescued from floodwaters by the Osceola County Sheriff's Office and the Florida National Guard. And over at Pebble Pointe in Kissimmee where there are 600 homes, Osceola deputies rescued people of all ages using airboats.

During the historic landfall of Hurricane Ian in late September 2022, Kissimmee was significantly impacted, proving that even inland cities are not "safe" from major hurricanes. While it did not face the catastrophic storm surge seen on the Gulf Coast, Kissimmee experienced record-breaking freshwater flooding. The storm dumped over 15 inches of rain across Osceola County, causing Shingle Creek to reach historic levels and inundating numerous neighborhoods and resorts. Many residents and tourists had to be rescued via high-water vehicles. In the years following, Kissimmee has invested heavily in drainage infrastructure and "flood-hardened" building codes to mitigate future risks. If you are visiting during hurricane season (June–November), Kissimmee is generally safer than coastal areas regarding wind and surge, but it remains highly susceptible to tropical deluges. It is always wise to choose accommodations with backup generators and to stay informed via local emergency alerts.
