As soon as Mammoth has the right weather conditions, they can start making snow and have snow all winter long, even if they get no natural snow at all. Aside from air temperature, the Snowmaking staff at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area keeps a close eye on the Wet Bulb.

For a beginner who's just starting to get familiar with the equipment and locations, Mammoth Mountain offers a range of skiing and snowboarding lessons. Experienced instructors offer both group classes and private lessons, and there are classes targeted to different age groups.

Mammoth is the highest ski resort in California at 11,053 feet, meaning it typically gets the driest snow in California and arguably the entire West Coast. Mammoth also has a slightly longer vertical drop (3,100') than Palisades Tahoe (2,850') – but Mammoth's vert can be skied in one continuous run.
