Is my baby an American citizen if born abroad?

A child born outside of the United States and in wedlock to a U.S. citizen mother and U.S. citizen father acquires U.S. citizenship at birth if one of the parents has been resident in the United States, or one of its outlying possessions, prior to the child's birth.

If you would like proof of your child's U.S. citizenship, you may file Form N-600, Application for Certificate of Citizenship, (www.uscis.gov/n-600) after your child meets all the conditions to acquire U.S. citizenship. A Certificate of Citizenship does not expire.
