Is Nara crowded on weekend?

Nara Park offers breathtaking views and great snapshot moments with deer throughout the year. Attractions tend to be busy seven days a week, but regardless of when you visit, you can expect fewer crowds than Kyoto and a more leisurely sightseeing experience.

In 2026, Nara remains one of Japan’s most popular day-trip destinations, and it is highly crowded on weekends, particularly in Nara Park and around Todai-ji Temple. Because it is less than an hour from major hubs like Osaka and Kyoto, local visitors and international tourists flood the city on Saturdays and Sundays. During peak periods like the 2026 Cherry Blossom season (late March to early April) and the autumn foliage season in November, weekend crowds can make navigating narrow pathways or getting a table at popular restaurants quite difficult. To avoid the heaviest congestion, it is recommended to visit on a weekday or arrive very early in the morning—around 8:00 AM—before the large tour buses arrive from nearby cities. Even on busy weekends, you can often find peace by walking further into the Kasuga Taisha forest or visiting the quieter temples on the outskirts of the park.

While four days in Kyoto might be more than you need to encapsulate things (as opposed to the months you could spend in Tokyo), I do think that four days is a good time to be based in Kyoto, with an easy day trip to Osaka on the itinerary, as well as a night or two at a retreat.
