Is Nara deer park closer to Osaka or Kyoto?

Nara is a small but hugely historic city lying around 40KM to the direct south of Kyoto and 35KM to the east of Osaka – it takes around 50 minutes to reach Nara from both starting points. The city is serviced by two main train stations – Kintetsu-Nara Station and JR Nara Station.

Nara Park is geographically located almost exactly between Osaka and Kyoto, but it is technically slightly closer to Osaka in terms of distance. It sits approximately 28 kilometers (17 miles) east of Osaka and 35 kilometers (22 miles) south of Kyoto. However, the travel time from both cities is remarkably similar, typically taking between 35 and 50 minutes depending on the train line. From Osaka, the Kintetsu Nara Line from Namba Station is the most convenient, taking about 40 minutes and arriving at Kintetsu-Nara Station, which is just a short walk from the deer. From Kyoto, the JR Nara Line or the private Kintetsu Kyoto Line offer similar speeds. Because both cities provide such easy access, Nara is one of the most popular day-trip destinations in Japan. Whether you are coming from the modern neon streets of Osaka or the traditional temples of Kyoto, you can reach the famous bowing Sika deer in under an hour for a relatively low fare.

My only word of advice to those visiting is that, due to Nara's hooved inhabitants, there aren't many places to get food in the park itself.
