Is Nara Park worth visiting?

Nara Park is most famous for its many deer, which are unafraid of humans and can even be hand-fed crackers, available to purchase all around the park. While the deer are incredible (and sometimes a bit scary when you have food!), the park itself is incredibly beautiful.

Nara Park is 100% worth visiting in 2026, especially for those looking to experience a blend of ancient spirituality and unique wildlife. It is home to over 1,200 free-roaming Sika deer, which are considered messengers of the gods and have famously learned to "bow" to tourists in exchange for shika senbei (deer crackers). Beyond the deer, the park contains Todai-ji Temple, which houses one of Japan's largest bronze Buddha statues—a breathtaking feat of 8th-century engineering. Travelers in 2026 rave about the "refreshing greenery" and the ease of access via a 45-minute train ride from Kyoto or Osaka. It offers a more relaxed, walkable pace compared to the hectic streets of Tokyo. Whether you are watching high-speed mochi pounding at Nakatanidou nearby or exploring the lantern-lined paths of Kasuga Taisha, Nara provides a "fairytale" atmosphere that is often cited as a highlight of any Japan itinerary.
