Is Nemesis a scary ride?

If you don't like the dark, jump scares, loud noises, drop towers or rides designed to cause you pain then this is not the ride for you. The drop tower element is pretty lame but the theming works so well to create anxiety from nothing really. You'll find yourself scared throughout but coming out underwhelmed.

Nemesis Reborn (the updated version of the original Nemesis at Alton Towers) is widely considered one of the most intense and "scary" roller coasters in the UK as of 2026. As an inverted coaster, it keeps your feet dangling as you navigate four inversions at speeds of up to 50 mph. What makes it particularly frightening for many is its "terrain-hugging" design, where the track dives into deep, rocky pits and narrow ravines, creating terrifying "near-miss" sensations. Following its 2024 refurbishment, the ride features a new, menacing "eye" animatronic that tracks guests, and a dark, foreboding soundtrack. While it doesn't have the record-breaking height of other coasters, its high G-forces and relentless pacing make it a "must-ride" for thrill-seekers, often leaving even experienced riders with "jelly legs" afterward.
