Is one night in Matera enough?

We had an overnight stay in a cavern hotel, and that allowed us to explore the Sassi after dark as well as by day. You may want to allocate at least two nights/one full day to Matera. It's definitely a unique place, also sleeping in a sasso (heritage districts) is a special experience itself.

Getting Around Matera One reason we loved Matera is because it is super walkable! We walked allll over town and although it's very hilly and has lots of stairs, it was so much fun! We wouldn't recommend renting a car here, as it would be a bit harder to park in the Sassi.
