Is Palm Cove or Port Douglas better for families?

Read more Page 3 Vicki's notes: Port Douglas is a coastal town and larger than Palm Cove. Port Douglas has direct access to the Great Barrier Reef, is close to the Daintree Rainforest and is more suitable for families with older children as there is more to do. you stay 6 nights that means 5 full days.

The choice between Palm Cove and Port Douglas in 2026 depends on your family's preferred "vibe." Port Douglas is generally considered better for active families; it has a lively town center, a wide variety of "family-casual" dining, and serves as the primary departure hub for Great Barrier Reef tours and the Daintree Rainforest. Palm Cove, on the other hand, is a much smaller, quieter village centered around a single esplanade. It is the better choice for families with toddlers or those seeking a "resort-style" stay where everything is within a five-minute walk. Palm Cove’s beach is more sheltered for swimming, while Port Douglas’s Four Mile Beach is grander but more exposed. If you want adventure and "things to do" right at your doorstep, choose Port Douglas; if you want a tranquil, boutique-style relaxation where you can watch the kids from a beachfront cafe, Palm Cove is the winner.
