Is Pena Park worth it?

I recommend going with the park/palace entry because it's worth the €14 euros. Now bring good comfortable walking shoes because when I tell you that you'll be doing a lot of walking only if you plan to explore more than just the palace.

Pena Park (and the Pena Palace) in Sintra, Portugal, is widely considered one of the most "worth it" day trips from Lisbon in 2026, though its value depends on your tolerance for crowds. The park is a masterpiece of Romanticism, featuring 200 hectares of winding paths, secret grottos, and exotic trees from all over the world. The highlight is the colorful Pena Palace, which looks like a fairy-tale castle with its bright yellow and red towers. For photography enthusiasts and history buffs, the intricate tile work and panoramic views of the Atlantic coast are unparalleled. However, because it is a UNESCO World Heritage site, it can be extremely busy. To make it "worth it," you must book a timed-entry ticket well in advance and aim for the earliest possible slot (usually 9:00 AM) to beat the tour buses. In 2026, many visitors find that exploring the lush, misty park grounds is actually more rewarding and peaceful than the crowded interior of the palace itself. If you enjoy hiking, vibrant architecture, and a sense of "old world" magic, Pena Park is an essential Portuguese experience; if you prefer quiet, low-tourist areas, you might find the neighboring Quinta da Regaleira a more satisfying alternative.

An alternative option is to follow the Caminho de Santa Maria footpath, which leads uphill from the historic centre of Sintra to the Castelo dos Mouros and Pena Palace. Be warned, this is a very steep hill and a demanding 55-minute hike, which can be very tiring in the heat of summer.

A castle ? Pena Palace ? sits very high up on the hill above Sintra. So high, it's not easily seen from town. Constructed in the 1800s, it's considered one of the world's great examples of Romantic architecture. Up on that same hill, there is an 10th century fortified wall and battlement built by the Moors.

Don't be like me—wear sneakers, or at least sturdier sandals. Due to its altitude and location closer to the coast, Sintra is often chillier than Lisbon, which was definitely the case when we visited. I recommend dressing in layers, and bringing a light jacket or sweater.
