Is Positano over crowded?

Firstly, it can get way too crowded for my liking in July and August. It's also not my choice of towns to stay on the Amalfi Coast. Alternatively, you can avoid climbing by veering on the main road, but it will take you double the time. You will probably be a little sore after walking around Positano for a day or two.
