Is Premier Platinum status worth it?

Although it takes work to earn elite status with an airline, it can often be worth it, especially if you travel often. This is the case with United's Premier Platinum status, which provides a bevy of benefits to those who invest.

United Airlines Premier Platinum status is widely considered the "sweet spot" for frequent flyers in 2026, offering a significant jump in value over the Gold tier. The most valuable benefit is the 40 PlusPoints awarded upon qualification, which can be used to request upgrades to United First or United Polaris on international flights. Platinum members also enjoy Economy Plus seating for themselves and up to eight companions at the time of booking, which is a massive perk for families or business groups. Other key benefits include a 10% mileage bonus (9 miles per dollar spent), three free checked bags of up to 70 lbs each, and Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status via the "RewardsPlus" partnership. While it doesn't offer the nearly-guaranteed upgrades of the 1K tier, the ability to confirm Economy Plus for a large group and the inclusion of PlusPoints for international upgrades make it highly "worth it" for those who fly at least 36 segments or 12,000 PQP annually. The added "Group 1" boarding also ensures you almost always find overhead bin space for your carry-on.
