Is Scream 1 bloody?

Frequent violence includes multiple stabbings, shootings, and characters shown disemboweled. Bloody injuries are seen, and there are references to rape, torture, and suicide.

By modern "torture porn" standards (like the Saw or Terrifier franchises), the original 1996 Scream is considered moderately bloody, but it is much more of a psychological slasher than a gore-fest. Director Wes Craven used blood strategically to punctuate the "meta" horror themes rather than relying on constant carnage. That said, it is an R-rated film for a reason. The opening scene involving Casey Becker (Drew Barrymore) is notoriously intense and features a visceral, albeit brief, shot of "evisceration" that set a high bar for the 90s slasher revival. The climax of the film involves a significant amount of blood as the killers reveal themselves and engage in a self-mutilation pact to look like "survivors." However, much of the violence is "quick-cut" and relies on the suspense of the chase and the iconic Ghostface mask. If you are sensitive to blood, the finale is the most challenging part, but for most horror fans, Scream is praised more for its sharp dialogue and subversion of tropes than for its "splatter" factor. It remains a foundational text in the genre for balancing tension with a "slasher" level of violence.
