Is SkyTrain faster than car?

SkyTrain provides the fastest, most-reliable travel times with the fewest transfers. In almost every case, SkyTrain to UBC will reduce transit times below those of a car during PM peak travel times.

In Vancouver, whether the SkyTrain is faster than a car depends entirely on the time of day and your destination. During peak rush hour, the SkyTrain is almost always faster for trips into and out of the downtown core, as it bypasses the heavy congestion on bridges and major arteries like Kingsway or Lougheed Highway. The automated system maintains high-frequency service (trains every 2–6 minutes), ensuring minimal wait times. However, for trips between suburbs or areas not directly on a transit line, driving remains faster due to the "last-mile" problem. Recent 2025 data suggests that for commuters heading to the Downtown peninsula at 9:00 AM, the SkyTrain can save between 15 and 30 minutes compared to driving. In off-peak hours, cars generally win on speed due to the direct nature of road travel, but the SkyTrain's top speed of 80 km/h (50 mph) and lack of traffic make it a highly competitive and predictable alternative year-round.
