Guests hoping to experience the iconic coaster will be out of luck, however, as Disney is gearing up to shut it down later this month. This refurbishment comes months ahead of the ride's permanent closure at the Resort, with a complete transformation of Space Mountain taking place in 2024.

The new opening date is now scheduled for the following day, October 27th, 2023. This isn't a huge delay but it could be a bit disappointing if you were lining up your park plans to ride Space Mountain specifically on its reopening day.
Magic Kingdom's Splash Mountain creatures sang their last notes in January of 2023, and Disneyland's on May 31, 2023. Now, the ride has closed its doors forever. The brand new ride replacing it, Tiana's Bayou Adventure, is inspired by Tiana, the radiant star of the 2009 animated hit The Princess and the Frog.
The Details. According to Disneyland, the attraction will remain closed through October 26, 2023, and reopen October 27, 2023. In past Halloween seasons, the park added a “Ghost Galaxy” holiday overlay, which added video projections of spinning nebulas and a fiery space demon to the pitch black indoor coaster.
While Disney could pick up and move some of its businesses from Orlando to another state, Disney World and its other theme parks aren't going anywhere. Moving all the infrastructure, including hotels, restaurants and shops as well as transportation to move guests around, just wouldn't be feasible.
On top of that, trips to Europe appear to be cannibalizing demand for domestic theme parks this year — likely both contributing to the downturn. In addition to the stormy political climate, experts also point to extreme weather and heat in Florida as a contributing factor.
The closing of the 30-year-old ride — which Princess Diana visited in 1993 — follows years of calls for change because it features several characters from Disney's 1946 film Song of the South, which featured racist stereotypes.
Disneyland closes rides throughout the year to allow for refurbishment. Sadly this means that sometimes our favorite rides, entertainment and restaurants require brief closures to keep things sparkling for guests.
As the title says, Space Mountain and other attractions often break for an hour or two and then they are back up and running. I was curious what actually is happening? Space Mountain has systems in place that require each train to be unloaded and reloaded in 20 seconds. If this time frame isn't met the ride shuts down.
