Is Tarragona or Girona better?

That is a question to which there is no easy answer! Both are well worth a visit. Tarragona has excellent Roman ruins whilst Girona has a lovely old town to wander around and city walls from which there are excellent views. You can reach both by train, Girona is quicker if you get the fast AVE train.

Choosing between these two Catalan gems in 2026 depends on whether you prefer Roman history and beaches or Medieval charm and gastronomy. Tarragona is an ancient Roman capital; its massive amphitheater overlooking the Mediterranean is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the city feels like a living museum of antiquity. It is better for those who want to combine historical sightseeing with a swim at the beach. Girona, on the other hand, is famous for its exceptionally preserved Jewish Quarter, its towering cathedral, and its "Game of Thrones" filming locations. It is widely considered one of the top food cities in Europe and is a world-class hub for professional cycling. In 2026, Girona is often the preferred choice for a "romantic" or "atmospheric" walk through narrow cobblestone streets, while Tarragona is the better choice for families or sun-seekers who enjoy wide plazas and ruins. Both are easily accessible from Barcelona via high-speed train in under 40 minutes, making them the two most popular day-trip destinations in the region.

The beaches in Tarragona are renowned for their extremely fine and golden sand, and for the very mild slope, which allows walking in the water or swimming out to 200 metres from the beach line.

You can make your trip even more special by including these 2 cities. Tarragona is much more interesting as a town to visit on the way to Valencia. Sitges has a few sights, but it's mostly a beach town and I would assume it would be packed in July, as are all beach resorts in Spain.
