Is Tel Aviv safe for American tourists?

Tel Aviv is actually very safe when it comes to crime figures. There is pretty much zero gun crime and you're very unlikely to get mugged anywhere. Violent crime in general is very rare. It's practically unheard of for anyone to be the victim of anything like that as a tourist.

As of late February 2026, the safety situation in Tel Aviv is categorized by the U.S. State Department as Level 3: Reconsider Travel. While Tel Aviv is a vibrant metropolis, the security environment is described as "unpredictable." On February 27, 2026, the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem issued an updated advisory urging vigilance due to heightened regional tensions and the risk of rocket or missile fire. While commercial flights are operating and many tourists continue to visit, Americans are advised to know the location of the nearest bomb shelter and follow "Red Alert" instructions from the Home Front Command. Travelers should stay informed via the "Smart Traveler Enrollment Program" (STEP) and be aware that the security situation can shift rapidly without prior warning.
