Is the castle in Kings Landing real?

Fort Lovrijenac doubles as the Red Keep in King's Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms. Lots of the scenes are filmed at this Fort including the tournament thrown in honour of King Joffrey's name day in season two. Visit DUBROVNIK and see some of the places where the TV SHOW was filmed.

There is no single "Kings Landing Castle," but the city seen in Game of Thrones is the very real, medieval city of Dubrovnik, Croatia. The "Red Keep" is primarily represented by Fort Lovrijenac (the Fortress of St. Lawrence), which sits on a 37-meter-high cliff just outside the city's western walls. Many of the iconic interior shots of the castle were filmed in the Fortress of Bokar and along the famous City Walls. However, the towering, majestic castle you see in the wide shots of the city's skyline is heavily enhanced with CGI. While the red-roofed buildings and limestone streets are authentic, the massive towers of the Red Keep were added digitally by the production team. In 2026, Dubrovnik remains a "shrine" for fans; you can walk the "Stairs to the Great Sept of Baelor" (the Jesuit Staircase) and visit the actual docks where the Battle of the Blackwater was filmed, but don't be surprised when the "castle" in the distance looks a lot smaller in person than it did on HBO.
