Is the Douro River still navigable?

About the Douro River It flows for about 550 miles from northern Spain through Portugal. Much of the river in Spain is not considered navigable. Therefore, river cruises take place mainly in Portugal and on the far western portion of the river in Spain.

Currently, after the building of various dams, the river is navigable, smoothly and calmly, for 210 km, between Oporto and Barca d´Alva.

If you're alone (which we don't advise!) then be sure to get your paddle and boat, then head to shore to empty the water and climb back in. Rivers are a wonderful kayaking environment as long as you're prepared for the currents and potential hazards.

Care must be taken when swimming as there can be powerful waves, hidden rocks or strong currents; only swim where it is shown to be safe. Safe waters include the Piscina das Mares pools at the Praia de Leça da Palmeira, the sheltered bay at the Praia da Aguda and northern side of the Praia de Matosinhos.
