Is the Duomo climb difficult?

My husband found the narrow walkway high up on the Dome difficult. You get a great view of the artwork but it is very high and narrow and because of the crowds it took us 15/20 minutes to get across it- a bit too long a time for a vertigo sufferer! They managed the Bell Tower without any difficulties.
