Understanding Disney Genie+ and Lightning Lane can be a bit confusing. If this is the case for you, remember that Genie+ is something you buy that'll give you access to Lightning Lane. Lightning Lane is an expedited queue service available for most rides within Disney theme parks.



In the 2026 Disney terminology, they are not the same thing, although they are part of the same system. Disney Genie is a free planning tool found within the My Disney Experience app that provides "suggested" itineraries and real-time wait times. Lightning Lane is the physical entrance at an attraction that allows you to bypass the standby line. To use that entrance, you must purchase a Lightning Lane Multi Pass (the service that replaced "Genie+") or a Lightning Lane Single Pass (for the most high-demand individual rides). Essentially, "Genie" is the digital brain of the app, while "Lightning Lane" is the premium service you pay for to save time. It is a common point of confusion for guests because the paid service used to be called "Genie+," but Disney rebranded it in late 2024 to make the distinction clearer. Now, if you want to skip lines, you are looking specifically for "Lightning Lane" products. The Multi Pass allows you to book up to three attractions in advance of your visit, adding a layer of pre-planning that wasn't available in the original Genie+ system.
