Is the Miami Metrorail free?

Miami-Dade County buses and the Metrorail service, including the Metromover and MetroConnect, will all be free of charge until the end of the year starting Monday, Nov. 13. NBC6's Olivia Jaquith reports.

No, the Miami Metrorail is not free in 2026. A standard one-way fare costs $2.25, and you must pay using a contactless bank card, a mobile wallet (like Apple Pay), or a pre-loaded "EASY Card/Ticket." The system does not accept cash at the fare gates. However, there is often confusion because the Miami Metromover—the smaller automated people mover that loops through Downtown, Brickell, and the Omni area—is always 100% free for everyone. Additionally, the various city-run "Trolleys" in Miami, Miami Beach, and Coral Gables are also free. For the Metrorail, riders can take advantage of "fare capping" at $5.65 per day, meaning once you spend that amount, all subsequent rides that day are free. While the Metrorail remains a paid service, it is the most affordable way to travel from Miami International Airport (MIA) to the city center via the Orange Line.
