We've continued our focus on increasing MPG for new and existing diesel buses, further reducing our diesel consumption. Our fleet continues to be one of the cleanest in the entire world with more than 3,300 Clean Diesel buses, 1,683 Hybrid-Electric buses, 749 Compressed Natural Gas buses, and 10 all-electric buses.

That breaks down to 5,269 battery electric buses and 211 fuel-cell electric buses. In 2021, there were 3,168 full-size transit battery electric buses and 129 fuel-cell electric buses. So even though fuel-cell electric buses are vastly outnumbered by battery electric buses, the former increased by 64% in 2022.

Only 5,000 out of the estimated 500,000 buses are electric, as of November 2021. Electric school buses have upfront costs more than double that of diesel buses. The electric buses cost around $300,000 to $400,000[vii] with similarly sized diesel buses going for around $125,000 to $150,000.

BEBs are powered by battery packs that run an electric motor to turn the wheels, the same as battery-powered electric cars. The batteries are recharged by plug-in chargers using electricity from the transmission grid. Since they do not use gasoline or diesel, BEBs do not produce tailpipe pollution.

On another, her husband took their daughter to and from school using the city's public buses, which are air conditioned. (Ordinarily, they take her to school only in the morning, as their pick up time is too early, Stokes said.)

In fact, electric school buses have safety features that make the risk of fire even more improbable, including sophisticated battery temperature controls, weather-durable casing and vehicle design that makes battery damage less likely.

Although all battery electric bus batteries will store electricity in the form of DC, or direct current, power, the electric grid transmits and provides electricity in the form of AC, or alternating current, power. Therefore, a critical process of charging a BEV is the transformation of AC power into DC power.
