As of March 2026, the Sanibel Causeway is fully operational and open to the public. While it suffered catastrophic damage during Hurricane Ian in late 2022—with several sections completely collapsing into the Gulf—Florida's Department of Transportation performed a record-breaking emergency repair that saw the bridge reopen to temporary traffic within weeks. By 2024, permanent reconstruction was largely finalized, and in 2026, the causeway islands have reopened for recreational use. Current visitors are reminded to obey a 20 MPH speed limit as final shoulder work and environmental monitoring, particularly for least tern nesting, continue along the route. It remains the only land link between the Florida mainland and the recovering communities of Sanibel and Captiva Islands.
