As of February 26, 2026, the Sanibel Causeway is fully open and restored to its pre-hurricane capacity. Following the devastating impact of Hurricane Ian, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) underwent a massive reconstruction project that was officially completed in late 2025. The new causeway features enhanced resiliency measures, including permanent bridge approaches and restored drainage and lighting systems designed to withstand future storm surges. While the bridge is open, travelers should be aware of ongoing utility work on Sanibel Island itself; for instance, this week (February 23–27, 2026), night-time lane closures are scheduled for sanitary sewer inspections along Periwinkle Way. However, the causeway itself is no longer under construction and provides seamless access for residents and tourists to the island's beaches and shops.
