Is the Sanibel Island Bridge fixed yet?

Sanibel Causeway reopens for residents and businesses, with a permanent fix still in the works. An 11 a.m. opening of the rebuilt causeway that links the island and the mainland was announced by Gov. Ron DeSantis at a briefing at the base of the first bridge segment.

Yes, the Sanibel Causeway is fully operational and has been restored to a permanent, resilient state as of March 2026. Following the catastrophic damage caused by Hurricane Ian in late 2022, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) completed a multi-phase reconstruction project. While emergency repairs restored temporary access within weeks of the storm, the permanent reconstruction was finalized in the Fall of 2025. This new design includes enhanced sea walls, reinforced bridge approaches, and improved drainage systems to withstand future storm surges. In 2026, all lanes are open to traffic, and the 35 MPH speed limit has been restored across most of the causeway. Travelers can now move freely between the mainland and Sanibel Island, though some peripheral island park amenities and boat ramps continue to undergo minor aesthetic improvements following the massive structural overhaul.
