Is the train ride from Zurich to Lucerne Scenic?

If you're looking for views then this route will most likely disappoint, especially if you're used to Swiss standards. There is some token scenery in the form of two lakes en route to take in however.

Yes, the train journey from Zurich to Lucerne is very scenic, even though it is a relatively short trip of only 45 to 50 minutes. As you depart Zurich HB, the train quickly leaves the urban sprawl and begins to skirt the shores of Lake Zurich. The most picturesque segment occurs as the train passes through the rolling green hills of the Swiss countryside and approaches Lake Zug. On a clear day in 2026, you can see the snow-capped peaks of the Urner Alps and Mount Rigi looming in the distance. To get the best views, try to sit on the left-hand side of the train when traveling toward Lucerne (and the right-hand side when returning to Zurich). While it doesn't have the "world-famous" status of the Bernina Express or the Glacier Express, this route serves as a perfect "appetizer" for the Swiss Alps, offering a stunning transition from the bustling financial hub of Zurich to the medieval, lakeside charm of Lucerne in less time than it takes to eat a long lunch.

But in general, If you want to do the touristy program then Luzern is the place. Zurich is the business city of Switzerland, it is very lovely and has many things to offer... but it is not as picture book quaint as Luzern.

Luzern is more comfortable, old money and beautiful setting on the lake. Interlaken is closer to the big mountains, hiking, etc. I prefer Interlaken, but Luzern is more comfortable for first time to Switzerland. I would not want to spend 4 hours on the train to commute from one to the other however.

Rail passes are almost always a smart buy for Switzerland, with its fairly high pay-as-you-go ticket costs and excellent transportation system. The Swiss Travel Pass is a particularly good deal, as it covers nearly all transport in Switzerland — not only trains, but buses, boats, and many high-mountain lifts.
