Is there a 797?

Despite initial interest from potential customers like United Airlines, the development of the Boeing 797 was put on hold in 2020 as Boeing focused on existing products and market reassessment.

As of early 2026, there is no official Boeing 797 in service or available for purchase. The "797" is the unofficial name long-associated with Boeing’s New Midsize Airplane (NMA) project, intended to fill the gap between the narrow-body 737 and the wide-body 787. While Boeing has fluctuated on this project for years, their primary focus in 2026 remains the certification of the 737 MAX 10 and the 777-9. Although industry rumors in 2026 suggest Boeing is working on a "clean-sheet" design to compete with the Airbus A321XLR, they have not officially designated it as the 797. Most aviation analysts expect that any "797" would not enter commercial service until the early 2030s. For now, the 797 remains a theoretical concept and a favorite topic for aviation enthusiasts, but if you are booking a flight today, the newest Boeing you are likely to fly is the 787-10 or the forthcoming 777-X series, not a 797.
