Is there a free shuttle bus in Sydney?

A free city centre shuttle bus (route 555) operates every 10 minutes on a circuit from Central Station to Circular Quay, along George Street, linking many of Sydney's attractions.

As of early 2026, the traditional "Route 555" free city shuttle in Sydney's CBD remains discontinued. However, the NSW Government has launched a new free shuttle service specifically for the opening of the Western Sydney International Airport (WSI). This interim free bus service connects the new airport at Luddenham with the St Marys train and bus interchange, running every 30 minutes from 4:30 AM to midnight. In the central city, while there is no "free" bus, the Sydney Light Rail and Sydney Metro have become so efficient that most travelers find them the preferred way to move. Additionally, there are private free shuttles operated by major hotels and some suburban shopping centers (like Westfield). For 2026 visitors, it is worth noting that some regional towns in NSW still offer "Community Shuttles," but for the iconic Sydney Harbour areas, you should plan to use a "tapped" Opal card or contactless payment for the world-class (though not free) public transport network.
